Our Story

Our Story

Our story begins with a sending heart.

First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, NC has long believed that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not meant to stop with one congregation or one community. From its earliest days, FBC Indian Trail has carried a deep conviction that faithfulness to the Great Commission means more than gathering; it means going. More than building, it means sending. More than growing a church, it means multiplying the Church.

As the leadership of Indian Trail prayed and sought the Lord’s direction, that conviction was shepherded by the heart of their senior pastor, Dr. Mike Whitson. Along with the church’s leadership, Dr. Whitson helped cultivate a vision that looked beyond the walls of their own campus toward communities still in need of a strong gospel witness. Through prayerful discernment, the Lord began to place a specific burden on their hearts for the coast of southeastern North Carolina, particularly Sunset Beach.

While Sunset Beach is known for its beauty, rest, and seasonal visitors, it is also home to many who live without a church family and without a clear, consistent gospel presence. What appears peaceful on the surface often hides deep spiritual need beneath. God used that reality to stir compassion and urgency within the leadership and people of Indian Trail.

Instead of asking what would be easiest or most comfortable, the church asked a harder question: What does obedience require? The answer led them to embrace the call to send—to release people, resources, and leadership for the mission of Jesus. This decision was not made lightly. It was bathed in prayer, fueled by generosity, and marked by a willingness to trust God with the outcome.

Out of that obedience, Waypoint Church was born, with pastoral leadership entrusted to Jacob Capps. Sent out with the support of the FBC Indian Trail, Jacob leads Waypoint Church with a clear calling to point people to Jesus and make disciples, carrying forward the same mission-minded, gospel-centered heartbeat that shaped its beginning.

Waypoint Church exists because a sending church believed the gospel is worth multiplying, and a pastor answered the call to go. We are here because First Baptist Church Indian Trail chose faith over fear, mission over comfort, and obedience over security—and because God raised up leadership willing to follow wherever He leads.

We carry that same sending DNA today. As Waypoint Church seeks to point people to Jesus and make disciples along the coast, we do so with deep gratitude for a sending church, faithful leadership, and a sovereign God who continues to build His Church. By His grace, this story is only the beginning.

Waypoint Church exists to be a spiritual marker that points people toward Jesus and equips them to go forward as disciple-makers, impacting our coastal community and beyond.
